New York Governor Signs Bill Banning Sexual Orientation Discrimination

New York Governor George Pataki (R), signed a bill that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing, public accommodations, education and credit. The bill defines “sexual orientation” as “heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, or asexuality, whether actual or perceived.”

The Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act covers public and private sector employees, since state employees have been covered for years pursuant to governor-issued executive orders. New York joins twelve other states with similar laws.
