Connecticut Increases Minimum Wage to $10.10 Over Three Years

Despite the fact that Connecticut’s minimum wage just rose from $8.25 to $8.70 per hour and was slated to increase to $9.00 in 2015, the Connecticut General Assembly could not wait to pass another minimum wage law.  The Governor signed a bill into law that will bring Connecticut’s minimum wage up to $10.10 in 2017, with interim increases to $9.15 in 2015 and $9.60 in 2016.

Connecticut lawmakers are the first to jump on President Obama’s bandwagon to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10, an idea he has espoused since last November.  Connecticut lawmakers even received a congratulatory call from Vice President Biden the day the Governor signed the bill.

Although some cities have higher minimum wages, like Sea-Tac, Washington, with $15 per hour; San Francisco, California, with $10.74 per hour; and Santa Fe, New Mexico, with $10.66 per hour, no state minimum wage rate is scheduled to reach as high as Connecticut’s.

Time will tell if other states jump on the $10.10 bandwagon or if the President is successful in passing legislation to raise the federal minimum wage (currently $7.25) to this number.  Keep in mind that the President did increase the minimum wage for federal contractors on new federal contracts to this magic number.
